Gale Patrick Hickman, Commissioner (Ret.) | Olivia Carrillo Hickman, J.D., M.B.T.
Gale P. Hickman brings fifty-four years of varied legal experience to Hickman & Carrillo’s wide spectrum of legal services, which include acting as a Professional Trustee, acting as a private judge, an appellate practice, litigation, litigation consulting, Alternate Dispute Resolution, Referee appointments, serving as an expert witness, and teaching Community Property and Evidence at Chapman University Law School.
Gale received an undergraduate degree in English from UCLA, and his J.D. degree from the University of California, UC College of the Law, San Francisco. After almost ten years as an Orange County Deputy Public Defender and criminal defense lawyer, Gale sat as a Juvenile Court Referee and Superior Court Commissioner in Orange County for twenty-eight years, serving in the Juvenile, Probate, and Family Law courts.
Gale has maintained a constant role as a teacher during his career. As an attorney and a judicial officer he has written numerous articles and created, presented, and participated in scores of educational programs for the Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB), the Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER), the Orange County Family Court, the Orange County Bar Association, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Public Law Center, the University of California, Irvine, and countless other programs and institutions.
Gale is also a produced screenwriter (“The Penalty Phase,” and “Eighty-Three Hours ‘til Dawn”), has written for the stage, and has been the recipient of frequent awards in recognition of his services to the legal community. He prizes most “The Gale P. Hickman Award,” presented to him in 2005 by the Family Law Section of the Orange County Bar Association for his “commitment to the highest standards of excellence in educating the Family Law Community.”
Olivia’s balanced approach to practicing law had its genesis at the University of San Diego, where she earned undergraduate degrees in psychology and political science, and at the University of Southern California Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree, while, simultaneously, earning a Master of Business Taxation from the University of Southern California’s Leventhal School of Accounting. Before beginning her career in Family Law, Olivia was a tax consultant for the top-tier accounting firms of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young.
Olivia believes in giving back to the community. She has served as the Chief Financial Officer for the Hispanic Bar Association and has also served on the Hispanic Bar Association’s Board of Directors, Judicial Committee, and the Dinner Committee. She has participated in the Orangewood Children’s Foundation’s Career Fair and Independent Living Program for teens transitioning from foster care and group homes to self-reliant living and has volunteered for Cal State Fullerton’s Special Games helping special athletes along with her husband and son. She has also volunteered at the Public Law Center’s Immigration Clinic.
Olivia is a member of the California State Bar and she is proficient in Spanish. She enjoys spending time with her family and her two dogs, Little Guy and Shadow.
